X (1996)

The first full-length anime adaptation of the manga by CLAMP (Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearch, Chobits).

Directed and co-written by Rintaro (Galaxy Express 999, Time Stranger, Metropolis).

Rintaro considers music to be the most important aspect of a movie. He’s gone so far as to say that a good script can't save a movie with bad music¹. In 1993 he directed X² - Double X, a series of anime music video (AMV) adaptations of the manga. The fourth AMV is set to the song X by X Japan and features animation by studio Madhouse. It functions as a teaser for the anime movie.

Rintaro is friends with Peter Chung of Aeon Flux fame. Aeon Flux similarly places importance on visuals and music over dialogue.
